The Third National Conference on CSR highlights the coal and mining sector’s shift towards outcome-driven community development to align with national growth objectives.
The Indian coal and mining sectors are undergoing a significant paradigm shift in how they approach Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). On October 9, 2026, the Minister of State for Coal and Mines officially inaugurated the Third National Conference and Exhibition on Corporate Social Responsibility (NCCSR 2026), organized by the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA).
This year’s two-day conference fundamentally pivoted the conversation away from basic statutory compliance and toward strategic, outcome-oriented community development designed to support the vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India). For decades, mining operations have inherently impacted local ecologies and communities, making the sector one of the largest contributors to CSR funds in the country. However, the Ministry is now emphasizing that financial allocation alone is insufficient. The new mandate focuses on strengthening board-level oversight and ensuring that CSR projects deliver measurable, long-term socio-economic returns.
Discussions at NCCSR 2026 heavily featured the need for sectoral alignment. Rather than fragmented, short-term philanthropic efforts, public sector undertakings like Coal India Limited—which historically spends nearly ₹1,000 crore annually on CSR—are being encouraged to pool resources into scalable projects. These include advanced healthcare infrastructure in remote mining belts, robust skill development programs for local youth, and sustainable environmental reclamation projects.
Industry leaders at the exhibition showcased how technology and data analytics are increasingly being utilized to track the impact of these CSR investments in real-time. By moving toward a model of targeted intervention and rigorous governance, the Ministry of Coal aims to ensure that the wealth generated from the earth translates into tangible, sustainable prosperity for the communities residing above it.
