SCCL recorded 4% growth in coal transportation during the first half of the current financial year, with supplies to Telangana thermal plants increasing significantly.
Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) recorded growth in coal transportation and overburden removal during the first half of the current financial year, which concluded on September 30.
During the first half of the previous financial year, SCCL transported 287.6 lakh tonnes of coal to consumers. This increased to 299.4 lakh tonnes during the corresponding period of the current financial year, registering 4% growth.
Coal transportation to thermal power stations in Telangana also increased during the period. SCCL transported 159.1 lakh tonnes to the state’s thermal power stations during the first half of the previous financial year. This increased to 198.2 lakh tonnes during the current year, marking a 24.58% increase.
SCCL said the higher supply was in line with directions from the State Government to prioritise Telangana’s energy requirements.
At Kothagudem Thermal Power Station, coal supply increased from 26.4 lakh tonnes during the first half of the previous financial year to 39.8 lakh tonnes during the current year, registering 50.76% growth.
Supply to Yadadri Thermal Power Station increased from 21.5 lakh tonnes to 33.9 lakh tonnes, representing growth of 57.67%.
At Bhadradri Thermal Power Station in Manuguru, SCCL increased coal transportation from 19.5 lakh tonnes to 24.4 lakh tonnes, registering 25.13% growth. SCCL transported 26.6 lakh tonnes of coal to Singareni Thermal Power Station, registering growth of 27.27%.
Coal transportation to NTPC Telangana increased from 19.4 lakh tonnes during the corresponding period last year to 25.3 lakh tonnes during the current year. For NTPC Ramagundam, SCCL supplied 43.5 lakh tonnes of coal by the end of September last year, compared with 42.7 lakh tonnes during the current year.
Measures to support coal supply
In view of El Niño conditions and the need to prioritise Telangana’s power requirements, SCCL has been coordinating with power sector institutions and taking measures to enhance coal production and transportation.
As directed by the State and Central Governments, the company has taken steps to supply the required quantity of coal to thermal power plants to the extent possible.
SCCL Chairman and Managing Director Dr Buddhaprakash Jyoti is interacting daily with the General Managers of all areas and monitoring coal transportation along with production targets. Five senior officials have also been assigned specific responsibilities to monitor coal transportation to thermal power stations and support smooth movement of coal.
SCCL said that meeting the power requirements of Telangana State is considered a moral responsibility rather than approaching coal sales purely from a business perspective. Accordingly, the company is transporting a larger share of its coal to thermal power stations within Telangana State.
Dr Buddhaprakash Jyoti said SCCL is moving forward according to a planned approach to achieve its annual targets of 620 lakh tonnes of coal production and 650 lakh tonnes of coal transportation.
