Coal stocks at domestic coal-based power plants remained above 18 million tonnes from 29 September to 10 October, as supplies kept pace with consumption.
Coal stocks at domestic coal-based power plants stood at 18.205 million tonnes (MT) on 10 October 2026, remaining above 18 MT since 29 September, according to the Ministry of Coal.
The Ministry said the stable inventory levels reflected coal supplies keeping pace with daily consumption at power plants. Supplies to plants with critically low stocks are being closely monitored to maintain adequate fuel availability.
Coal is also being redistributed to vulnerable power stations according to their requirements to support uninterrupted electricity generation. Rail-based coal movement to the power sector strengthened during the period. An average of 469 rakes per day was loaded during the first ten days of October, compared with 426 rakes per day in September.
The Ministry continues to coordinate with Coal India Limited (CIL), Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), the Ministry of Railways and power utilities to maintain coal evacuation and supplies to thermal power plants.
