In a landmark shift for the heavy extraction sector, XCMG’s massive export of battery-electric haul trucks to Fortescue places Australia at the forefront of green mining.

XCMG’s aggressive push to electrify the global mining sector is gaining massive traction, centered around a historic partnership in Australia’s Pilbara region. As detailed in a recent industry feature, the Chinese heavy equipment behemoth is deploying its next-generation zero-emission machinery to some of the world’s largest iron ore operations.

Under a landmark strategic agreement inked with mining giant Fortescue, XCMG is mandated to supply up to 200 units of its colossal 240-tonne battery-electric haul trucks. This marks China’s largest-ever export order for green mining equipment and serves as the cornerstone for Fortescue’s ambitious goal to eliminate fossil fuels from its terrestrial mining operations by 2030. XCMG leadership emphasized that the rigorous, high-temperature conditions of the Pilbara serve as the ultimate proving ground, demonstrating that electric earthmovers can deliver the massive scale and reliability previously reserved for diesel machinery.

As the heavy equipment industry pivots rapidly toward low-carbon operations, operators are selecting suppliers based purely on technological performance, payload efficiency, and the total cost of ownership. Having already deployed fully autonomous electric fleets domestically, XCMG’s expanding Australian footprint proves that sustainable, heavy-duty material handling is no longer a concept, but a highly productive commercial reality.
