Hindalco Industries and Utkal Alumina International have secured ASI Performance Standard V3.1 certification for the Baphlimali Bauxite Mine in Odisha, making it India’s first bauxite mine to receive the accreditation.

Hindalco Industries Ltd., the Aditya Birla Group’s metals flagship, and Utkal Alumina International Limited (UAIL) have received Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard V3.1 (2023) Certification for their Baphlimali Bauxite Mine in Rayagada district, Odisha.

The ASI Performance Standard V3.1 accreditation applies to the planning, mining, onsite crushing, and conveyor transportation of bauxite from the Baphlimali Bauxite Mines, which have an annual output capacity of 8.5 million tonnes. The mines feed bauxite to Utkal Alumina’s refinery operations and are an important component of Hindalco’s integrated aluminium value chain.

Baphlimali is the first bauxite mining facility in India to receive ASI Performance Standard V3.1 accreditation. This milestone brings Hindalco’s ASI-certified portfolio to 11 operations in mining, smelting, and downstream manufacturing. The portfolio of approved operations includes of plants headquartered at Mouda, Hirakud FRP, Taloja, Kuppam, Alupuram, Belur, Renukoot, Belagavi, Hirakud, and Aditya.

Utkal Alumina is one of Hindalco’s main alumina-producing plants, generating around 2.67 million tonnes of alumina yearly. Baphlimali is the refinery’s primary source of bauxite, so it plays an important role in alumina production.

Kailash Pandey, CEO-Aluminium Upstream, Hindalco Industries, says “Baphlimali is a strategically important asset for Hindalco and a critical link in our integrated aluminium value chain. The ASI certification of Baphlimali reflects our commitment to embedding sustainability, transparency and responsible sourcing across every stage of production. As we expand certification across additional upstream operations, we are strengthening the foundation of a more integrated and globally recognised responsible aluminium value chain from mine to metal.”

Dr Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer, Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), states, “The certification of the Baphlimali Bauxite Mines reflects the continued engagement of Utkal Alumina and the wider Hindalco Group with ASI’s sustainability standards. The growing number of Hindalco operations participating in ASI certification across different stages of the aluminium value chain demonstrates a commitment to implementing recognised environmental, social and governance practices and advancing responsible production across the sector. Such efforts play an important role in strengthening transparency, traceability and stakeholder confidence throughout the aluminium value chain.”

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is the world’s premier sustainability standards and certification organization for the aluminium value chain. The Performance Standard assesses environmental, social, and governance performance across operations, including biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions, community participation, human rights, occupational health and safety, and responsible corporate practices.

CETIZION Verifica conducted the independent third-party certification audit under ASI’s Witness Assessment method, with members of the ASI Secretariat present as part of the organisation’s quality assurance system.

As global customers want more sustainably sourced commodities and better supply chain transparency, sustainability certifications are becoming a key differentiation throughout industrial value chains. ASI accreditation gives independent confirmation that activities adhere to internationally acknowledged sustainability criteria and ethical manufacturing practices.

The Baphlimali accreditation demonstrates Hindalco’s dedication to responsible mining, sustainable manufacturing techniques, and the development of internationally competitive aluminium supply chains in India.
