Kutch Copper plans to integrate 115 MW of renewable energy at its Mundra facility as it targets lower emissions and expands copper production capacity.

Kutch Copper Ltd, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, plans to integrate 115 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy into its operations at its copper smelter in Mundra, Gujarat. The initiative forms part of the company’s efforts to reduce emissions, conserve water and improve resource efficiency.

The company currently operates a copper smelter with an annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes and plans to increase capacity to one million tonnes per annum. The expansion would make it the world’s largest single-location custom smelter, according to the company.

In its first sustainability report, Kutch Copper outlined plans to incorporate environmental, social and governance considerations into its operations and business decisions. The company said the planned renewable energy integration would help reduce the carbon footprint of its operations and support its long-term decarbonisation objectives.

Kutch Copper also reported that it operates using nearly 100 per cent desalinated water and follows a zero-liquid-discharge approach to reduce freshwater consumption. The company said it treats 99.8 per cent of its sulphur emissions using environmental technologies. It is also investing in community programmes covering healthcare, education, livelihoods and social development.

The Adani Group has committed US$1.2 billion to the project, according to the company. Kutch Copper said the expansion and sustainability measures would support its operations as demand for copper grows across energy transition, electric mobility and power transmission applications.
